Who We Are
Welcome! Thanks for visiting the online presence of Salem. God has created us to be in relationship. If that primary relationship with God is missing, then something is missing in our lives. In the ancient church, a bishop in North Africa, Augustine of Hippo (354-430), offered in a prayer to God: “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till we find rest in you” (The Confessions of St. Augustine, Book 1 Chapter 1). Jesus says, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29 NRSV).
Mission – The Salem United Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Vision – connecting people, building community, transforming lives, through Jesus
Salem/Shalom – “Salem” originated from the Hebrew word, shalom. This is usually translated as peace. God’s peace, however, is not just the absence of conflict but the wholeness of life. Shalom means completeness, wholeness, health, peace, joy, love, friendship, well-being, justice, and salvation. Salem/Shalom is God’s will for the world, for the renewal of creation. Therefore, we hope to embody God’s Salem for the world.
